Transformers: War For Cybertron
Transformers: War For Cybertron

A Fresh game that hopes to transform the series` reputation

Before you dismiss this as another ropey tie-in designed to shift a bunch of copies in the wake of michael Bay`s latest epilepsy-inducing CGI showreel, give us a moment to explain. War For Cybertron is entirely unrelated to the firm, and while that means you won`t have Megan Fox blowing you kisses at you as you play, it also means that the game hasn`t been hastily lobbed together, then booted out the door to coincide with movie hype. For a start, the game doesn`t even take place on earth, instead, High moon studios, which was behind the lukewarm Bourne Conspiracy game, has come up with a vision for the transformers` home planet - a place that has not as yet been established in the franchise`s canon. The team has worked with Hasbro to ensure that this is the definitive rendering of Cybertron, and if Micheal Bay and chums decide to go there in the future, they may well have to dance to High Moons merry tune.
The Transformers themselves have also had a makeover. They`re more similar to the original toys, but because there`s no need to use the transformations as a disguise, the Autobot and Deception vehicle forms are much more stylised and manoeuvrable than in previous games. When you`re in robot form, the game reveals itself to be heavily inspired by Gears Of War, with tight over-the-shoulder camera and chunky characters-specific melee weapons, such as hefty axe or a substabtial-looking war hammer. It`s difficult to know whether transformers: War For Cybertron will turn the franchise around on Xbox 360. These days our pavlovian response to the announcements of a transformers game is to shrink in terror and make whimpering noises, but taking inspiration from gritty shooters like Gears Of War and creating a densely decorated sci-fi world is certainly moving in the right direction.
